The Discipline of Praise: Confucius on the Need for Verifiable Merit

Confucius said: “If I praise someone, it is only after I have tested and verified their merit.”

If I do sometimes exceed in praise, there must be ground for it in my examination of the individual.

如有所誉者,其有所试矣。
