A Defining Boundary: “A Superior Man May Lack Benevolence, But a Mean Man Never Possesses It”

Confucius said: “There may be superior men lacking in benevolence, but there are never mean men who possess it.”

Superior men, and yet not always virtuous, there have been, alas! But there never has been a mean man, and, at the same time, virtuous.

君子而不仁者有矣夫,未有小人而仁者也。
