Four Pillars of a Whole Life: The Seriousness of the Way and the Freedom of the Arts

Confucius said: Set your will on the Way, base yourself in Virtue, lean upon Benevolence, and find enjoyment in the Arts.

Let the will be set on the path of duty. Let every attainment in what is good be firmly grasped. Let perfect virtue be accorded with. Let relaxation and enjoyment be found in the polite arts.

志于道,据于德,依于仁,游于艺。
