The First Rule of Service: Confucius on Why the Work Comes Before the Wage

Confucius taught: “In serving, reverently fulfill your duties; consider your salary afterward.”

A minister, in serving his prince, reverently discharges his duties, and makes his emolument a secondary consideration.

事君,敬其事而后其食。
