The Futility of Thought Without Study: Confucius on the Peril of an Empty Mind

Confucius reflected: “A day and night of thought brought no gain. Learning is the better way.”

I have been the whole day without eating, and the whole night without sleeping; occupied with thinking. It was of no use. The better plan is to learn.

吾尝终日不食,终夜不寝,以思,无益,不如学也。
