The Insufficient Hold: Confucius on Why Virtue, Not Intellect, is the True Keeper of Gains

Confucius said: “If one’s virtue is insufficient to hold what knowledge attains, it will surely be lost.”

When a man’s knowledge is sufficient to attain, and his virtue is not sufficient to enable him to hold, whatever he may have gained, he will lose again.

知及之,仁不能守之;虽得之,必失之。
