A Sage’s Lament: Confucius on the Unequal Contest Between Virtue and Appetite

Confucius lamented: “Alas! I have never seen anyone who loved virtue as much as they loved beauty.”

It is all over! I have not seen one who loves virtue as he loves beauty.

已矣乎!吾未见好德如好色者也。
