A Teacher’s Fear, A Disciple’s Vow: “How Should I Dare to Die?”

Confucius: “I thought you had died.” Yan Hui: “With you alive, how could I dare to die?”

“I thought you had died.” Hui replied, “While you were alive, how should I presume to die?”

“吾以女为死矣。”曰:“子在,回何敢死?”
