Confucius on Talent and Virtue: The General Who May Not Be a Sage

Confucius said of Zi Lu: He could manage the military of a great state, but I do not know about his virtue.

You, in a kingdom of a thousand chariots, might be employed to manage the military levies, but I do not know whether he be perfectly virtuous.

由也,千乘之国,可使治其赋也,不知其仁也。
