The Foundation of Knowledge: Against Hasty Action, For Learning from Observation

Confucius said: I do not act without knowledge. True knowledge comes from broad inquiry, discerning selection, and careful observation.

There may be those who act without knowing why. I do not do so. Hearing much and selecting what is good and following it; seeing much and keeping it in memory – this is the second style of knowledge.

盖有不知而作之者,我无是也。多闻择其善者而从之,多见而识之,知之次也。
