The Angler’s Mercy: A Hook, Not a Net; A Flying Arrow, Not One at Rest

The Compilers recorded: Confucius fished with a hook, not a net; he shot birds, but not when they were roosting.

The Master angled, but did not use a large net. He shot, but not at birds perching (or roosting).

子钓而不纲,弋不射宿。
